The Group of 7

A small art gallery opened up around the corner from where I live. There, private collector is selling off most of his collection, which includes a number of paintings by the members of the Group of 7.

I have always admired the work of the Group of 7 and have often used them as inspiration for my own work. Seeing these paintings got me back into looking at Gatineau Park as they would have seen it.

Upper Laskville Falls

Laskville Falls cascades down the Gatineau escarpment, a 900m drop. Getting to the upper falls requires either a 10 k hike from the Chaplain Lookout or hiking up the escarpment trail but the effort is worth it, if your timing is right.

The Laskville Falls is very dependent on runoff from the winter thaw or rain. It can dry down to just a trickle after a few days without rain. For this picture we had a couple of days of heavy rain followed by a clear sunny break.

I started early in the morning at the base of the falls and worked my way up the 900m, stopping to take pictures at several points. Of course, after taking this picture I had to hike back down to my car.

fall stream

One of the delights of Gatineau park are the many small streams and waterfalls. I have been doing a series on these small streams. This is the first of the set.

More On-Site Micro fashion

Classy woman.jpg

Both of these shots were taken during the same session, with my portable studio. This shows the range of tone that I can do with two flashes and a 15×12 foot space. Just a few minutes of photoshop needed to remove seams.

On site fashion work

I have a portable studio that I put together for on location portraits, but another use is what I call “small scale fashion”. All I need is a 15×10 foot area to work in and I can shoot images such as this.

This works great for small boutique stores. I can set up in the store in 1/2 hour, do an hour or two of shooting then breakdown the studio. The boutique then has custom posters for the store window. As stores have most dresses and outfits in all sizes, I can use local, aspiring models who are willing to work for the experience and who might not be the exact size required by a major fashion shoot (where there is only one dress size). This keeps the costs down to the level most stores can easily afford.

Yet another waterfall pic

Waterfall.jpg

Another waterfall. This time I wanted to capture the length of the fall as well as some motion, but not blur the flow too much. After much fiddling with filters, aperture settings and waiting between clouds I got the shot I wanted.
